Snowboard Photography - Capture the Moment

It is amazing what snowboarders do out on the mountain and especially in the half pipe. Do you know what is more amazing? The only thing more amazing than getting to see these moves done in the air is to capture that perfect moment while the snowboarder is in the air, on film. If you look in any snowboarding magazine, the shots are perfect. The timing and angle is incredible in these photos. However, you should know that there is a lot of work and effort that go into these photographs.

Depending on the shots you are going to take, this will depend on the type of camera lenses that you will need to work with. In a half pipe shot, you want a smaller lens. The 70-200 is a small lens that many snowboard photographers use. Some lens sizes include 18 millimeters and 14 millimeters but these cameras run on the expensive side. This is in the half pipe where you want to be close up and personal. This is where snowboarding and skiing photography differs because in skiing photography one needs a longer lens. However, in such events like the parallel giant slalom, the slalom and the 'snowboard bordercross', you are going to want a larger lens to capture the action.

It makes sense for photographers to think about needing protective gear but the most important "gear that a 'snow' photographer should be wearing is warm clothing. Usually not much action occurs where the photographer is, so in most cases you do not need to be worried about being hit. However, many photographers who are getting started in snowboard photography may not realize that spending over six hours on the snow is not that pleasant, especially if you are not properly bundled up. Another piece of advice is that batteries normally run out of power quicker in the harsher and colder weather. If you are going to be out on the snow for a long time it is strongly advisable that you carry extra batteries with you so that you do not run out of power.
