Jake Burton - Meet the Creator of Snowboards and Get to Know His Company

Jake Burton Carpenter has come a long way into converting a simple toy released in the sixties into the largest snowboarding company and manufacturer in the world. Jake was born in New York City on April 29, 1954. As the sixties rolled around he was fascinated by a toy snowboard, the Sherman Poppen's Snurfer. Jake was always interested in extreme sports including skiing and skateboarding. When he was in college his dreams were cut short when he broke his collar bone three times in a single year. This prevented him from skiing on his college team. He then took some time away from the slopes and pursued a degree in economics at the New York University. This is where his life changed.

As Jake Burton began to feel the inner skier and snowboarder in himself, he decided to leave New York and move to Londonderry in Vermont to work as a snowboard shaper in a barn. That is quite a difference from living in the Big Apple. He began to create snowboards and test them out himself on the slopes. He modernized the Snurfer by making the snowboards out of bentwood laminate. He also created snowboard bindings in order to hold the snowboarders feet and boots firmly in place so that he or she could control the snowboard. This was all achieved in 1977 when the first snowboard manufacturer was created.

Over thirty years later, the Burton Snowboard Company has continued to be an innovator of new snowboard technology and accessories.
