Snowboarding in New Zealand: Some of the Best Slopes in the World

New Zealand is renowned for a lot more than being the place where "The Lord of the Rings" movies were shot. New Zealand is already one of the most popular skiing, snowboarding, and heli skiing/snowboarding destinations in the entire world. There are many resorts across the mountainous island country, but the majority of winter athletes will head to the resorts in Queenstown and Wanaka, which are both well established.

If your travels demand a shoe string budget, then there are more remote slopes that are becoming increasingly popular for both snowboarders and skiers who want adventure and great slopes at a cheaper price. Some remote slopes like Mount Potts Backcountry and Temple Basin Ski Area are becoming very popular and fit this mold. There are many other slopes that also fit this mold, making this country a buffet of choices for skiers and snowboarders alike.

The winter sports season in New Zealand is generally from early July to early October, making it a great destination for snowboarding "bums," who need their fix but can't quite get it in most of the United States and Europe during the warmer summer months.

One thing to be aware of is that in New Zealand you generally won't find nearly as many of the on site resorts that you might be familiar with if you shred in North America and Europe. In New Zealand it is generally tradition to stay in a nearby ski town and then commute to and from the slopes on a daily basis.

There are many benefits to snowboarding in New Zealand, not the least of which is that you can hire experienced guides to actually be dropped on "virgin slopes" on many of these mountains. This allows you the incredible experience of shredding down mountain slopes that have not been touched before.

There are many fantastic slopes in New Zealand...so many that you would be hard pressed to find a way to fit them all in on one trip, but what an adventure to go down and try it!
