Snowboarding in India: Shredding in the Shadow of Mount Everest

There aren't many places in India where you can break out the snowboard and start shredding the slopes, but in the northern part of the country is the great Himalaya mountain range. Long known as a great place for skiing and mountain climbing, but mountain sports of all kind are growing at an amazing pace, and wherever you can find good skiing there is room for good snowboarding, as well.

Snowboarding is still relatively new in India, especially compared to how long the sport has been around in North America and Europe. The Auli region of northern India is especially renowned for its winter sports set up. In this area there are many huts, rooms, and hostels that are even partially government sponsored to strongly encourage tourists and provide them with reasonably priced housing as they enjoy tearing down the slopes.

Many snowboarders love the Indian Himalayas, citing the snow as some of the best powder they've been able to find anywhere. The snows have a reputation as being smooth and the terrain as a natural fit for snowboarders, with many natural jumps, steep speed sections, as well as areas that are relaxed and open, giving you the full room you need to shred the way you want and enjoy the mountains for what they are.

Another great Indian resort for snowboarders and other winter athletes is the Gulmarg resort, which is relatively new but already has some excellent mountain slopes that have attracted snowboarders from across the globe. While the thought of snowboarding in India might throw some people off, there are some fantastic opportunities to snowboard there in the Himalayas...under the figurative shadow of Mount Everest.

In addition to this, a lot of snowboarders believe that snowboarding isn't just a sport, but it is a life style that celebrates going off the beaten path. In that regards, visiting India and making it to the tallest mountain range in the world, all this before you even snap your boots to the board, is exactly the kind of adventure that an avid snowboarder should love.

India may not be the first destination that comes to mind when you think of snowboarding, but it should be pretty high on the list.
