Snowboarding for the Disabled: Adaptive Snowboarders Rule the Slopes!

Athletes with disabilities have overcome to found success in many different types of winter sports. If skiing is one of the sports that athletes with disabilities can excel at, why not snowboarding? In fact, snowboarding has become wildly popular with the handicapped athletic community, and they are excelling at this winter sport.

The most common term used for snowboarding by disabled athletes is "adaptive." So "adaptive snowboarding" is snowboarding by athletes with disabilities, while "adaptive snowboarder" refers to the athlete, and "adaptive shredding" is also part of that lexicon.

In fact, snowboarding is considered by many adaptive shredders to be easier for handicapped athletes to pick up than skiing is. This makes snowboarding not only a logical choice, but this sport is extremely addictive for many adaptive snowboarders, who talk about the feelings of joy and freedom that snowboarding provides.

Adaptive snowboarding includes athletes with a wide array of injuries or impairments, including spinal cord injuries, prosthetic limbs, amputations, head injuries, and multiple sclerosis (MS). In fact, this type of snowboarding gained some widespread attention when Montel Williams, the former talk show host, used adaptive snowboarding as therapy for his MS. Ever since then he has been hooked, and he has dedicated his time to spreading awareness of both MS and adaptive snowboarding as a treatment.

Many slopes have programs to help disabled athletes learn how to get into adaptive snowboarding, and to help them along in the process of becoming comfortable at the sport. After becoming comfortable, many adaptive snowboarders go on to absolutely thrive, carving down the slopes with the efficiency and know how of some of the best out there on the slopes.

As snowboarding as a sport continues to grow and gain more popular acceptance, adaptive snowboarding is sure to follow that trend. This shows how fantastic a sport snowboarding is, and that it truly is open to anyone willing to put in the hours and learn.
