Sometimes injuries are going to happen. That's part of snowboarding, just like it's part of any major sport, but there are steps you can take to help prevent injuries while snowboarding. Obviously a day on the open slopes is a whole lot more fun if it doesn't end up with a trip to the emergency room.
One of the first and most obvious things to watch for to prevent injury is fitness level. If you're morbidly obese and just getting into shape, snowboarding doesn't make sense. Like any outdoor activity, there are certain levels of fitness you should hit before putting serious time into this activity. Likewise, snowboarding uses different muscles than hiking or cycling, so take it easy early on.
Even if you are in good shape, don't assume that you can skip stretching. Stretching before AND after snowboarding is essential in order to stay healthy and help avoid muscle soreness and injury.
Snowboard Clothing is a major one. A normal sweater and stocking cap don't cut it, no matter how nice a day it feels like. Wear several layers off clothing that offer padding, but don't restrict your movement and mobility. Wear goggles and if it's really cold, limit your time out on the slopes.
Wrists get injured the most skateboarding, and the same is often true with snowboarding. There are several companies that sell good wrist guards that help protect from sprains and breaks, especially during falls.
Don't borrow other people's equipment. When you buy snowboarding equipment, it should be fit just for you. The boots, bindings, and all other equipment should be specifically fit to you. If it doesn't, then you're much more likely to be injured.
Maybe the most important tip of all to avoid injury is plain good old fashioned common courtesy. Be aware of other snowboarders and skiers around you, and know the rules of common courtesy on the slopes. Running into someone else, or cutting someone else off (or having the same things happen to you) cause some of the worst accidents, so pay attention and show the same respect that you want to be shown and you can avoid any major accidents and have a day full of fun.
