Snowboarding might feel like it’s been around forever—especially because of the dramatic evolution of the sport over the last 20 years. However, Snowboarding has only been around since the mid-sixties, a relative baby where sports are concerned.

Supposedly, Sherman Poppen invented Snowboarding when he put two skis together for his daughter to surf on a snowy hill in Michigan.

The early Snowboarding sport was dubbed Snowsurfing and the enthusiast a snowsurfer. After the initial introduction of Poppen’s snowsurf board, the board and sport eventually evolved into Snowboarding, as we know it today. Pioneers like Jake Burton (Burton Snowboards), Tom Sims and Demetrije Milovich took snowboard design technology to new levels. Snowboarding eventually gained mainstream popularity in the mid-eighties, when it was found in exclusive places like ski resorts that had previously banned snowboarding.

Like every novelty sport, Snowboarding has enjoyed significant growth and—at one point—a bumb rap. Because young boys and men enjoyed the sport, Snowboarding quickly earned a negative image that has changed since going mainstream. Including a variety of riders, Snowboarding now has more universal appeal. Snowboarding styles have also changed dramatically, which now includes three main categories.
