Deconstructing Freestyle Snowboarding: The basic moves
and characteristics of Freestyle Snowboarding
Freestyle Snowboarding is an extremely popular style of snowboarding
that is characterized by wild and spectacular trick riding.
The equipment used in Freestyle Snowboarding is slightly different
than in regular snowboarding - the board is generally shorter, lighter,
and softer and very responsive, and the boots are softer as well.
Also, the board's camber is often flatter than usual, thus enabling
the board to spin easily - a desirable attribute in Freestyle Snowboarding.
Freestyle Snowboarding requires training in many forms of both
aerial and on-land twists, turns and grabs. Snowboarders practice
these types of Freestyle Snowboarding in half-pipes and on the mountainside.
Here are several basic and not-so-basic moves used in Freestyle
Snowboarding:
- Ollies: One of the most basic aerial jumps in Freestyle
Snowboarding, accomplished by jumping with the front foot first
and using the spring of the board to get up in the air
- Shifties: An aerial Freestyle Snowboarding trick that
gives the appearance of twisting the body in a 180-degree turn
by twisting the upper and lower body in opposite directions while
in mid air and returning to normal position before landing
- Fresh Fish: A type of Freestyle Snowboarding grab in
which a snowboarder takes hold of the heel side edge of the snowboard
between the bindings with the back hand, bones out the back leg,
and keeps the front arm pointed straight up, all while in mid
air
- Alley Oop: A move used in half pipe Freestyle Snowboarding,
characterized by spinning 180 degrees up a half pipe instead of
the more usual downwards spinning
