What are traditional Wooden Snowshoes made from and how can we have fun using them?

As their name suggests, traditional Wooden Snowshoes are made from wood - and, yes, you can have a lot of fun using them. In short, traditional Wooden Snowshoes come in four different designs:

• The Huron - made from a white-ask frame with full-grain rawhide lacing. This shoe is ideally used for family trekking along trails or open spaces.
• The Bear Paw - made from a white-ash frame. This shoe is effective in the bush or in circumstances where you are going to need to change direction often. As such, trappers prefer to use this shoe.
• The Ojibwe - made from a white-ash frame with full-grain rawhide lacing. This shoe is ideal for open spaces and deep snow. Historically this was the shoe used for trekking as it can glide over hard surfaces.
• The Modified Bear Paw - made from a white-ash frame with full-grain rawhide lacing and, due to its modifications, is a multi-purpose shoe.

Maintaining your traditional Wooden Snowshoes

Maintaining your traditional Wooden Snowshoes is an essential task to ensuring their longevity. In fact, this is not a difficult task because all you need to do is to make sure to coat the Wooden Snowshoes, both the frame and the webbing, with varnish and they'll last forever! However, if you want to make sure your shoes last that little bit longer, it is suggested to weave the Wooden Snowshoes using extra strength leather straps rather than using split leather straps, which are far more likely to break.
