What is "Gortex"?
"Gortex" is a man-made manufactured product that breathes out most of the moisture produced by your body during any strenuous activity, whilst at the same time not letting in any water or moisture to give you a damp feeling. As a result, Gortex makes for a good product to act as a barrier between the body and the elements in any extreme sport involving cold weather.
The answer here is simple. Knowing that the Gortex material is going to keep the damp away from your body. But Gortex also allows for moisture to permeate out from your skin. This means that Gortex is a perfect product for use in gloves, which traditionally can become wet very easily. Consequently, wearing a pair of Gortex Gloves as part of your second or third layer of protection against the natural elements, with your first layer (that which is closest to your skin), should ensure that the original intent of Gortex is taken full advantage of. Namely that you can put these gloves on your hands and they'll remain warm and wet-free inside.
The only real downside to wearing a Gortex Glove, if you could even call it a downside, is the fact that the glove does not wash well, which does mean that they have occasionally been known to fray easily - thus losing their principal benefit of not being 100% waterproof.
