It should be obvious to anyone that if you're just about to set off on a hiking trek, the hiking shoes you wear are going to be of critical importance. Make the wrong choice, and what could have been an enjoyable hike has just become a very painful event. So why is there a debate raging over whether or not you should purchase a Gortex Boot?
In order to go some way to explaining why there is such a debate of whether or not wearing a Gortex Boot is going to make your hike more pleasant or cumbersome, you need to know what a Gortex Boot is. Basically, this a boot made from Gortex material which provides a barrier against liquid permeating into the foot, whilst at the same time being permeable to foot moisture that may build up whilst you walk.
Developed in the mid-1970s, many a hiker since then has sworn blind that this type of boot material available if you're going on a long hike. However, nearly as many a hiker has argued that the product doesn't allow for enough permeation and that you end up with a foot that sweats a lot, leading to problems such as Athlete's Foot, blisters, and rashes.
Well, the jury is still out on this one. However, it is clear that Gortex material has been one of the most innovative creations to affect outdoor sporting life in the last 50 to 100 years. It is also clear that some wearers of a Gortex Boot have yet to fully understand the mechanics of a permeable/waterproof substance. But, at the end of the day, if you don't feel comfortable wearing any hiking shoes, and if you anticipate doing some serious hiking, then it's important that you get some comfortable hiking shoes, whether they be Gortex or not.
