Before you ride, measure up: What you need to know about choosing a snowboard size

Before you purchase-or even rent-a snowboard, think about the snowboard size: length and height. These measurements are essential when choosing a snowboard size that's right for you.

Determining the right snowboard length

The correct snowboard length depends on:

Your riding style
Height
Weight

Start with a height comparison. Place the board on end and hold it next to you. If you choose a:

Long board-the top of the board will be eye-level to several inches above the top of your head.
Medium board-the top of the board will rest between your chin and nose.
Short board-the top of the board will come between your collarbones and chin.
In general, long boards are used for deep powder and speed. Medium length boards are good for intermediate to advanced riders who take on a variety of terrain. Freestyle or trick boards are shorter in length because shorter boards are easier to maneuver.
In addition, riders who are overweight may be advised to choose a longer, stiffer board, and riders who are underweight may be more comfortable with shorter, more flexible boards.

Determining the correct snowboard width

The right width also is an important factor when choosing a snowboard. Women and men with small feet may prefer narrow snowboards. Men or women with big feet will need wider boards.

Before you buy your snowboard
