You're A Big Boy Now! Or How To Start Doing Snowboarding Flips

While not actually falling down can be an exciting part of snowboarding for beginners, eventually the thrill of being able to stand, move, and stop gets a little stale. It's inevitable that at some point even the most sensible-minded snowboarder is going to yearn for something more, the need to do something... well, something a little more exciting. And that of course means tricks! Tricks are categorized in a number of different ways but most typically come in the form of surface or aerial spins and flips. But before you begin dreaming of doing snowboarding flips, keep in mind that you're going to need to learn to ride all over again.

'Huh?! What are you talking about?' You say. ‘I’m doing just fine.’ Well, one of the most fundamental skills required before advancing through the Great Book of Snowboarding Tricks is a fakie, which is little more than a switched stance. In other words, your feet position is swopped around from what it would traditionally be. Harder than it sounds, this new way of riding will almost require you to learn the subtleties and nuances you've just picked up all over again -- imagine playing a sport left-handed when all you've ever done is play right-handed and you can begin to get an idea of what this entails.

It's important that this be learned because it's the only way to start or end certain tricks and it can aid in recovery during others. It's therefore a good idea to, before even attempting too many other tricks, fully master this technique. Go ahead, I'll wait. You done? Right. From there you can graduate to slightly harder spins and wheelies, though it is best to stay far from jumps, rails and halfpipes until you're really certain of your basic snowboarding fundamentals. We're certainly not trying to be a downer, but just remember that paying all those hospital bills is money that could be spent on going to awesome new resorts or buying better equipment.

And speaking of which, in anticipation of the boards you're likely to break, or the extra padding you might need (we kid 'cos we love), the links to the right-side of this page should guide you to a host of snowboarding products. You know, just in case you need a spare! Everything you'll need, from clothing to impact protection devices are easily accessible from there.
