Handy Hints And Tips For Snowboard Sales, Closeouts

In our eternal quest to help save you a few dollars on your snowboarding equipment (hey, it all adds up), we thought it might be a good idea to put together a few helpful tips for you to consider when next you go searching for any snowboard sales, closeouts or deals you can find. These are by no means the only way to pick up a good snowboard deal (maybe you've got a rich uncle, who are we to say?) but they're useful things to keep in mind when next you need to upgrade or if you're looking for a low-end board for your first time out. Here are the top five:

1. Rent First, Buy Later

This isn't a money-saving tip per se, but it's worth mentioning. When starting out it can be easy to get so carried away that you take the plunge, plunking down ridiculous sums of money to equip yourself with the best of everything just 'cos the salesperson said so. Take a deep breath. Be patient. Try out a few different boards and keep renting until you find a snowboard you like. Then learn all you can about that particular brand or model. Making an informed decision will save you money, one way or another.

2. Buy Second-Hand Or Used Snowboards

Aside from the stigma attached to owning something that someone else has already used, there's absolutely nothing to lose (your fragile ego excepting) from buying a good quality, well looked after second-hand snowboard. You might not have a whole lot of recourse if it turns out to be a dud, but the good thing about buying used is that you can more than likely arrange to try out the board before buying it or even ask the seller's advice.

3. Shop Online

Okay, so this one might be a little bit of a cop-out. But come on, it's a known fact that you can score great deals buying your snowboarding gear on the web. The reduced overhead and global market mean that online stores can offer snowboard deals that are far superior to many retail outlets. Having said that, you need to be careful of less than reputable 'fly-by-nighters' but for the most part there are more than enough honest guys out there from whom you can get your stuff. And just in case you need a little help finding them, we've linked a good deal of products to the right (shameless plug, we know!).

2. Buy Your Board Out-Of-Season

This goes pretty much hand-in-hand with the below tip, but it warrants mentioning. The snowboard industry works just like every other money-making enterprise - out with the old and in with the new. And so every season retailers will try to offload their old stock or poor sellers to make way for the forthcoming season's lineup. It's not uncommon to save as much as 30% (sometimes more) at a snowboard sale such as this. The season might be over, but picking up a steal will only add to the anticipation of the next one. 4. Past Seasons' Models, Lesser Brands

We've said it time and time again, and we'll continue to say it because it's one of the most important things you can do when trying to shave sizeable pennies off the price of a new snowboard purchase. Do you really need the hottest snowboard going? Sure, it's an amazing feeling knowing that you own the cutting edge in board design, but who really cares at the end of the day? Is that satisfaction worth paying double, or even triple the price an otherwise solid yet older, but cheap snowboard would run you? And let's be honest, unless you're an expert, many of the subtle differences in snowboard technology are all but lost on you. All that matters is that you're comfortable with your board, and especially as you start out, buying a less well-known brand or an older snowboard could be the best decision you make. Remember it's not what it looks like or whose logo is plastered on top of it, but what it feels like. If you like it, who cares what anyone else thinks?

Don't forget that we've got a whole mess of links lined up along the right-hand side of this page that'll help you find what you're looking for. If the tips don't come in handy, then those links surely will!
